Air Products [APD:US], a US-based industrial gas producer, has unveiled its intentions to construct Europe’s largest blue hydrogen plant in Rotterdam, Netherlands, as reported by ESG Today on November 6. This ambitious project involves the establishment of an advanced carbon capture and carbon dioxide (CO2) treatment facility at Air Products’ existing hydrogen production plant in Rotterdam. Scheduled to commence operations in 2026, the facility will capture CO2 emissions from the hydrogen plant and ExxonMobil’s Rotterdam refinery. Notably, this initiative will be integrated into the Porthos system, one of the world’s largest carbon transport and storage projects, contributing significantly to Air Products’ goal of reducing CO2 emissions in the port of Rotterdam by more than half.
Blue hydrogen, generated by converting natural gas into hydrogen and capturing associated CO2 emissions, serves as a cleaner energy alternative. The blue hydrogen produced by Air Products’ facility will be supplied to ExxonMobil’s Rotterdam refinery and other customers. This project not only advances Air Products’ decarbonization objectives but also supports customers in challenging industries as they transition toward cleaner energy solutions. Furthermore, the initiative aligns with the Netherlands’ strategic vision to transform Rotterdam into a global hub for hydrogen production, import, application, and transport, facilitating the transition to sustainable energy practices in Northwest Europe.
