Apple has once again highlighted its commitment to sustainability and carbon neutrality with the release of its latest Product Environmental Report, focused on the newly launched iPhone 16 lineup. This report underscores Apple’s ambitious ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) strategy, detailing the progress made in reducing the environmental impact of its products and achieving its long-term carbon neutrality goals.
One of the key achievements highlighted in the report is a 30% reduction in lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, compared to a baseline scenario. This achievement is primarily driven by the increased use of low-carbon electricity within Apple’s supply chain, which the company reports has reduced product emissions by more than 20%. The company continues to work closely with its suppliers, urging them to decarbonize their Apple-related operations. As of 2023, 95% of Apple’s manufacturing suppliers have committed to using 100% renewable energy for Apple-related production by 2030.
In its efforts to become carbon neutral across its entire business, manufacturing supply chain, and product lifecycle by 2030, Apple has made significant strides not only in renewable energy but also in the use of sustainable materials. The iPhone 16 models contain over 25% recycled content, contributing to a 7% reduction in emissions. Apple has also set ambitious targets for its material sourcing, aiming for 100% recycled cobalt in its batteries by 2025. The iPhone 16 already includes 100% recycled cobalt and more than 95% recycled lithium in its batteries, further reducing its environmental footprint.
Beyond materials and energy, Apple is also focusing on reducing product packaging waste. The company is committed to removing plastics from its packaging by 2025, with the iPhone 16 models featuring 100% fiber-based packaging. Apple is also increasing the durability of its products, enhancing their energy efficiency, and offering customers the option to trade in or recycle their devices at the end of their lifecycle.
Apple’s approach to sustainability is holistic, with the company stating, “We take responsibility for our products throughout their life cycles—including the materials they are made of, the people who assemble them, and how they are recycled at the end of life.” By reducing its environmental impact, conserving resources, and ensuring the use of safer materials, Apple is positioning itself as a leader in ESG and sustainability reporting.
