Saudi Arabia’s Aramco has taken a significant leap towards environmental sustainability by partnering with Danish decarbonisation company Topsoe to build a pioneering lower-carbon hydrogen plant in the kingdom, as reported by Reuters on October 9. This ambitious project will harness renewable electricity to produce hydrogen for power generation, with a key focus on capturing and storing resulting carbon dioxide emissions. With a daily production capacity of 6 tons of hydrogen, this venture builds upon a successful pilot project in Denmark, showcasing Aramco’s commitment to innovative solutions for reducing carbon emissions. Moreover, Aramco envisions the construction of a larger pilot plant, with an impressive annual CO2 capture capacity of 1,250 metric tons, underlining their dedication to scalable and impactful environmental initiatives.

In parallel, Aramco is actively engaged in other cutting-edge initiatives to combat climate change. Their collaboration with Siemens Energy to develop a direct air capture test unit in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, illustrates their commitment to removing CO2 from the atmosphere. This unit, expected to be operational by 2024, aims to remove 12 tons of CO2 annually. Additionally, Aramco’s successful pilot of a new CO2 sequestration method in Jazan, Saudi Arabia, involving the dissolution of CO2 in water and injection into volcanic rocks, showcases their innovative approach to carbon capture technology.
