Australia has officially unveiled its first sustainable finance taxonomy, a major milestone in the nation’s ESG and carbon neutral strategy. Developed by the Australian Sustainable Finance Institute (ASFI) with support from the Treasury and national regulators, this science-aligned, Paris-compatible framework provides clear guidelines for directing capital into net-zero aligned investments across Australia’s diverse economy.
“This release marks a transformative moment for Australia’s sustainable finance market,” said ASFI CEO Kristy Graham, highlighting the rigorous 20-month consultation involving finance, industry, and civil society stakeholders. The voluntary taxonomy classifies economic activities based on their climate alignment, offering investors transparency and confidence when evaluating green investments.
Uniquely tailored to Australia’s economic landscape, the framework includes high-emission industries such as minerals, mining, and metals, sectors critical to the country’s economy and energy transition. The taxonomy also incorporates cultural considerations, embedding standards for First Nations engagement and cultural heritage protection.
Leading financial institutions—ANZ, Westpac, NAB, the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC), and HESTA—will participate in a pilot program to test and refine the taxonomy for broader adoption. The pilot will inform future updates and guide best practices in sustainable finance implementation.
Dr. Guy Debelle, Co-Chair of the Taxonomy Technical Body, emphasized the taxonomy’s role in reducing uncertainty and strengthening investor confidence, stating, “It offers a clear, science-aligned guide to help direct capital towards Australia’s green economic transformation.”
The Climate Bonds Initiative, a key technical partner, has committed to align its global certification scheme with Australia’s taxonomy, reinforcing international harmonization and investor trust.
As part of the government’s broader Sustainable Finance Roadmap, this taxonomy establishes a strong foundation for a resilient, globally credible sustainable finance market in Australia—advancing its ESG leadership and carbon neutral strategy while attracting vital climate finance.
