The Department of National Defence (DND) in Canada is advancing its Defence Climate and Sustainability Strategy (DCSS) for 2023-2027, aligning with the Federal Sustainable Development Strategy (FSDS) to support the nation’s environmental sustainability goals. This strategy focuses on climate action, sustainable consumption, and the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly from DND’s infrastructure and light-duty vehicle fleets. The department is committed to meeting the federal target of a 40% GHG reduction by 2025 and striving towards net-zero emissions in procurement by 2050.

DND’s sustainability efforts align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically those aimed at responsible consumption and climate action. Key initiatives include transitioning to zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) and adopting green procurement practices to minimize environmental impacts. The department faces challenges such as the global microchip shortage, which has delayed the procurement of green vehicles, forcing the purchase of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Despite these setbacks, DND is committed to replacing its fleet with greener options.

In addition to emission reductions, DND focuses on waste reduction through the diversion of construction and demolition materials from landfills, supporting a circular economy. The department is also working to foster reconciliation with Indigenous communities, ensuring that projects and activities respect Indigenous lands and rights.

As Canada’s largest energy user and GHG emitter within the federal government, DND’s role is crucial in the nation’s efforts to achieve net-zero emissions. The DCSS contributes to Canada’s implementation of the 2030 Agenda, pushing for sustainable practices across federal operations and aligning with Canada’s climate targets. This comprehensive strategy highlights DND’s commitment to sustainability, carbon-neutral goals, and advancing a greener future for Canada.
