Canada's Sustainability Reporting Faces New Challenges Amid Tougher Regulations in 2024

As sustainability reporting in Canada reaches a critical juncture in 2024, heightened regulatory scrutiny is pushing companies to refine their environmental claims and ESG strategies. The enactment of Bill C-59 has introduced stringent regulations aimed at curbing “greenwashing,” empowering the Canadian Competition Bureau to penalize misleading environmental claims. With 2030 carbon reduction targets fast approaching, Canadian businesses must carefully review their sustainability communications to ensure compliance.

A recent analysis of 52 TSX 60 companies revealed a trend towards greater accountability in sustainability reporting, as 6% of companies have paused their ESG disclosures while awaiting clearer guidance. However, the majority of businesses continue to align with global reporting standards like SASB, TCFD, and GRI. Notably, there is a shift in terminology, with “sustainability” replacing “ESG” in many reports, reflecting the growing importance of carbon-neutral strategies and tangible environmental goals.

Seventy percent of reviewed companies have committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, with 66% setting interim 2030 targets, aiming for an average 42% reduction in emissions. Despite these ambitious goals, 35% of companies indicated that their ESG objectives are either off-track or being re-evaluated.

In 2025, Canada’s sustainability landscape will become even more complex with the expected enforcement of Bill C-59, the potential introduction of the Canadian Sustainability Disclosure Standards (CSDS), and the looming federal election. Companies will need to stay agile and closely monitor political and regulatory developments to successfully navigate this evolving environment. Ensuring compliance with the emerging regulatory framework while aligning with global carbon-neutral strategies will be crucial for maintaining credibility and meeting stakeholder expectations in the years ahead.
