Croatia is set to host its first major geothermal energy conference, the Geothermal Investment Forum Croatia 2025 (GIFC 2025), in Zagreb on March 3-4, 2025. This landmark event will bring together policymakers, industry leaders, and financial institutions to discuss strategies for accelerating geothermal energy development and its role in Europe’s carbon neutral strategy.

As the demand for renewable, stable, and carbon-neutral energy grows, geothermal power is emerging as a key solution to reduce emissions and enhance energy independence. According to the European Parliament’s 2023 EU Policy Document on Geothermal Energy, geothermal sources have the potential to supply up to 25% of Europe’s heating and cooling needs and 10% of electricity demand. Recognizing this potential, the European Commission is working on an EU geothermal action plan to facilitate investment, policy coordination, and project development.

Croatia boasts one of the highest geothermal potentials in Europe, exceeding the European average by 60%, presenting a strategic opportunity to lead the region’s clean energy transition. Under its National Energy and Climate Plan, Croatia aims to generate 68 MW of geothermal electricity by 2030, with projections reaching 405 MW by 2050, positioning the country as a major hub for green energy.

The forum will also explore the economic and environmental benefits of geothermal power, particularly in urban development, industrial applications, and agriculture. With financial backing from institutions like the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the World Bank, and the European Investment Bank (EIB), Croatia’s push for ESG-driven investments aligns with the broader EU Green Deal.

By leveraging geothermal energy, Croatia is setting a new benchmark for sustainable development, contributing to Europe’s decarbonization efforts while attracting global investors.
