Switzerland has unveiled new proposals to strengthen its sustainability disclosure regulations, including mandatory net-zero roadmaps for companies to align with the country’s 2050 carbon-neutral strategy. The consultation, open until March 2025, seeks to amend the Ordinance on Climate Disclosures, in effect since 2023, with updated rules taking force in 2026.
Under the new framework, large Swiss companies and financial institutions will be required to disclose detailed climate-related information, including greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, climate risks, and transition plans. These disclosures will align with global standards like the ISSB and the EU’s ESRS, replacing the existing threshold of 500 employees to include firms with 250 employees, CHF 25 million (€26 million) in assets, or CHF 50 million (€52 million) in sales.
A cornerstone of the proposal is the requirement for companies to present comprehensive net-zero roadmaps. These plans must outline sector-specific, science-based interim emissions reduction targets and strategies for scaling climate-friendly technologies. Financial institutions will also need to align financial flows to facilitate Switzerland’s net-zero goals.
The proposal mandates that disclosures be electronically formatted for compatibility with international platforms, enhancing transparency and accessibility.
The revised rules aim to align Switzerland’s corporate governance with international sustainability standards, reflecting recent developments such as the ISSB’s integration of TCFD recommendations. This initiative also supports Switzerland’s Climate and Innovation Act, which emphasizes achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
By adopting these enhanced ESG measures, Switzerland positions itself as a leader in sustainability and corporate transparency, providing a robust framework for businesses to align with global carbon-neutral strategies while fostering long-term environmental and economic resilience.
