Google has partnered with energy storage startup Energy Dome to deploy its advanced long-duration energy storage (LDES) technology globally. This partnership, including a strategic investment from Google, aims to address a key challenge in the clean energy transition: ensuring a reliable, 24/7 supply of carbon-free energy. The collaboration focuses on utilizing Energy Dome’s innovative CO2 Battery, which enables the storage and dispatch of renewable energy from sources like wind and solar for up to 24 hours, helping to balance the grid during periods of high demand.

Founded in 2019 in Milan, Italy, Energy Dome has developed a unique energy storage solution that uses CO2 as a storage fluid in a thermodynamic process. As the CO2 warms up, it expands and drives a turbine to generate electricity, which can then be dispatched into the grid as needed. This solution offers a significant advantage over traditional energy storage technologies, such as lithium-ion batteries, which typically provide shorter-term storage capabilities.

The partnership is a crucial part of Google’s ambitious goal to run its operations entirely on carbon-free energy (CFE) by 2030. Google aims to match its electricity demand with CFE 24/7 across all regions where the company operates. The new agreement marks Google’s first commercial deal involving long-duration energy storage and is a key step in achieving this goal.

Under the agreement, Google will support the deployment of Energy Dome’s technology across strategic regions, including Europe, the U.S, and the Asia-Pacific. The companies have already identified a pipeline of sites for development. Google’s investment and partnership with Energy Dome are expected to accelerate the commercialization of LDES technology, making it more affordable and accessible to communities worldwide.

The collaboration highlights the potential of LDES technology to scale quickly, providing a flexible and reliable way to integrate renewable energy into the grid, while supporting grid resilience and energy accessibility for all.
