Ireland Moves Forward with ESG and Sustainable Tourism Strategy

Ireland is taking bold steps toward sustainable tourism, aligning with global ESG goals and advancing its carbon neutral strategy. Tourism Ireland, the country’s official tourism board, has integrated sustainability into its long-term vision, focusing on eco-friendly travel experiences that minimize environmental impact.

The country has embraced initiatives that enhance responsible tourism. Ireland’s Greenways-repurposed railway lines converted into scenic cycling and walking trails-allow visitors to explore the landscape with minimal carbon emissions. Additionally, the boat rental sector along the River Shannon has transitioned to hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), cutting carbon emissions by 92%. These developments reflect Ireland’s commitment to reducing its ecological footprint while promoting sustainable travel.

Revitalizing Ireland’s peat bogs is another key element of its carbon neutral strategy. Previously exploited for fuel, these bogs are now being restored through EU-backed initiatives. This transformation helps sequester carbon, supports biodiversity, and generates sustainable tourism opportunities for rural communities.

Tourism Ireland measures its sustainability success through an innovative “revenue per carbon footprint” metric. This approach prioritizes long-term stays and meaningful engagement with local communities over short-haul, high-impact visits. By attracting eco-conscious travelers who contribute to the local economy while reducing emissions, Ireland is redefining sustainable tourism.

To combat greenwashing, Ireland is developing a state-backed certification program in partnership with Fáilte Eire and Tourism Northern Ireland. This initiative will ensure that businesses genuinely meet ESG and sustainability standards, reinforcing Ireland’s reputation as an authentic green destination.

As Ireland continues its sustainability journey, it sets a benchmark for responsible tourism worldwide. With transparent policies, innovative eco-friendly initiatives, and a strong carbon neutral strategy, Ireland is positioning itself as a leader in ESG-driven tourism. Travelers seeking immersive, sustainable experiences will find Ireland an ideal destination in 2025 and beyond.
