Los Angeles County has launched a five-year environmental justice plan aimed at addressing pollution and climate health issues that disproportionately affect vulnerable communities. Led by the Office of Environmental Justice and Climate Health (OEJCH), the initiative aims to reduce environmental hazards and mitigate the impacts of climate change through proactive policies.
The plan focuses on several key areas, including community engagement, interagency coordination, policy development, data collection, and accountability. By fostering partnerships between public and private sectors, as well as community organizations, the county seeks to create sustainable solutions to environmental challenges. A key priority is to track and mitigate pollution, air quality degradation, and the rising impacts of climate change such as extreme heat, wildfires, and severe storms.
The plan supports the county’s ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) goals by prioritizing equitable access to clean environments and enhancing public health outcomes. By adopting a carbon-neutral strategy, Los Angeles County aims to build climate resilience and prevent environmental harm before it reaches a crisis level. This includes leveraging community data to inform decisions, developing stronger regulations, and ensuring that marginalized communities are at the forefront of environmental policy.
Supervisor Janice Hahn emphasized that the county is moving away from a reactive approach to pollution and climate risks and instead proactively integrating environmental justice into countywide operations. Additionally, Supervisor Hilda L. Solis highlighted the urgency of addressing climate and environmental equity, stressing the importance of protecting vulnerable populations from hazardous waste and pollution.
As Los Angeles County continues to face the impacts of climate change, the new plan is expected to drive sustainable practices and make the region a leader in environmental justice and climate health.
