German authorities have approved Mercedes-Benz AG and renewable energy developer UKA Group to begin construction of a 140-megawatt onshore wind farm in Papenburg, Northern Germany. The facility, expected to be operational in 2027, should supply around one-fifth of Mercedes-Benz’s electricity requirements in the country.
The project comes as Germany accelerates its renewable energy rollout in a bid to phase out fossil fuels. With 20 turbines planned, the Papenburg wind farm will serve as a cornerstone of Mercedes-Benz’s efforts to reduce Scope 2 emissions and prioritize renewable energy across its production footprint. By 2030, the automaker has set targets to cut CO₂ emissions from production by 80% compared with 2018 levels and source 70% of its energy needs from renewables at its own sites.
Jörg Burzer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, underscored the project’s dual ecological and economic importance. He noted that securing a reliable supply of renewable electricity will not only support decarbonization goals but also mitigate exposure to volatile energy markets, an assurance increasingly valued by investors.
The wind farm is backed by a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) and will be delivered through a consortium of German firms. Nordex will supply the turbines while Max Bögl Wind AG will provide hybrid towers with hub heights of 164 meters and handle the concrete foundations. UKA Group, Germany’s largest wind developer, will act as project owner and power supplier under a 25-year agreement. The Papenburg facility is part of UKA’s broader 1.5-gigawatt onshore wind pipeline currently under construction in Germany.
By aligning corporate decarbonization strategies with national renewable expansion, the project highlights the potential for industry-energy partnerships to thrive in tightening energy markets and signals a promising future for large-scale corporate clean power initiatives.
