Apple [APPL:US] has revealed that 320 suppliers, representing 95% of the group’s direct manufacturing spend, have committed to using 100% renewable energy for producing Apple products, as reported by ESG Today on April 18. This marks a significant increase from last year when approximately 250 suppliers were committed to utilizing 100% renewable energy for Apple manufacturing. The progress will contribute to Apple’svalue chain decarbonization target, as electricity use isthe single-largest source of the company’s carbon emissions associated with product manufacturing. Meanwhile, the group has formed new partnerships to deliver nearly 7 million gallons of water over the next 20 years. By restoring rivers and aquifers and financing access to drinking water, the company aims to replenish 100% of the freshwater used in corporate operations in high-stress areas by 2030.

Apple called on its suppliers to reduce their Apple-related Scope 1 and 2 emissions footprints in October 2022, positioning progress towards these targets as crucial assessment criteria for selecting its suppliers. Since then. The iPhone maker has witnessed a significant growth in clean energy use across its supply chain. Last year, over 25.5 million megawatt-hours (MWh) of clean energy were generated across Apple’s value chain,avoiding over 18.5 million tons of carbon emissions.Furthermore, the tech giant looks to address the greenhouse gas emissions associated with customers using their devices. It plans to scale up investments in new renewables worldwide, aiming to match every watt of charging electricity with clean electricity by 2030.
