Switzerland has unveiled an ambitious climate plan, committing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 65% by 2035 compared to 1990 levels. This commitment is a crucial step in the country’s carbon neutral strategy, which aims for net-zero emissions by 2050. The new target outlines an average reduction of 59% between 2031 and 2035, highlighting Switzerland’s dedication to sustainable development and environmental responsibility.
The Swiss Federal Council confirmed that these emissions reduction goals will primarily be achieved through domestic measures. This focus on internal policy adjustments signals Switzerland’s proactive approach to addressing climate change. The new targets not only surpass previous 2021-2030 emissions reduction goals but also align with the recommendations of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). By adhering to these guidelines, Switzerland ensures it remains on track to meet its long-term climate objectives.
As part of the broader climate strategy, Switzerland is also revising key policies such as the CO2 Act, Climate and Innovation Act, and Electricity Supply Act. These updates will integrate renewable energy and nuclear energy, which will play significant roles in achieving the country’s climate neutrality goals. The government plans to submit its updated climate strategy and new emissions reduction target to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) by February 10, underscoring its commitment to meeting international climate obligations.
The updated plan reaffirms Switzerland’s commitment to ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles, positioning the country as a leader in global climate action. By investing in renewable energy and emission-reduction strategies, Switzerland is not only advancing its own carbon neutral strategy but also contributing to the global fight against climate change. This effort demonstrates how governments can lead the way in integrating sustainability into national policy, ensuring a cleaner, greener future for all.
