An analysis by The Guardian reveals that data centres owned by tech giants like Google, Microsoft, Meta, and Apple are emitting greenhouse gases (GHGs) at levels 7.62 times higher than officially reported. These companies’ emissions, particularly in their in-house data centres, are vastly underreported, raising concerns about the transparency of their carbon-neutral strategies. Amazon, though excluded from the analysis, remains the largest emitter among the big five tech companies.

Data centres, crucial to supporting AI and cloud technologies, contribute significantly to global energy consumption. As AI demands grow, emissions from these centres are projected to increase sharply by 2030. A Goldman Sachs report predicted that AI-related energy demands would surge by 160%, highlighting the challenge of managing energy needs in this rapidly evolving industry.

The GHG Protocol’s current reporting method, especially around Scope 2 emissions (which include electricity for data centres), has drawn criticism. Environmentalists argue that creative accounting through renewable energy certificates (RECs) allows companies to underreport their true environmental impact.

As tech companies continue to promise carbon neutrality, the disparity between reported and actual emissions highlights a critical ESG challenge. While Google and Microsoft are working towards phasing out RECs by 2030 and adopting more transparent reporting, concerns persist about the industry’s broader impact on global emissions. Addressing the gap in GHG accounting is vital to aligning their operations with ESG goals.
