Brussels Airport is taking bold steps to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030, moving its original target forward by two decades. This ambitious ESG initiative is reshaping air cargo operations through renewable energy, digital innovation, and infrastructure modernization to make aviation more sustainable.

A key project in this transformation is replacing the central heating plant with a net-zero carbon system, cutting 70% of CO₂ emissions. Additionally, a 65,000 m² solar panel installation will double the airport’s solar energy supply, with half of the generated power supporting cargo partners. The airport is also advancing sustainable logistics by constructing net-zero carbon cargo facilities, ensuring every new building meets BREEAM Excellence certification for energy efficiency.

Brussels Airport is pushing for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) adoption, partnering with DHL Express and Shell to deliver 25,000 tonnes of SAF. This initiative will reduce carbon emissions across the air freight supply chain, helping DHL’s customers meet sustainability targets while supporting the airport’s carbon neutral strategy.

Technology is a driving force in this sustainability push. The Digital Green Lane project is optimizing truck cargo handovers, reducing delays and fuel consumption. Advanced freight management apps, RFID tracking for automation, and real-time pharmaceutical monitoring tools are improving efficiency and compliance in cargo handling.

Beyond carbon reduction, Brussels Airport is also investing in biodiversity and water conservation. The airport is expanding green spaces, reducing paved areas, and developing a comprehensive water conservation strategy. Collaboration is key, with initiatives like the Stargate EU Green Deal project, which focuses on electrification and hydrogen-powered ground equipment.

Despite challenges such as the long lifespan of freighter aircraft, Brussels Airport is making sustainability a core part of its operations. By integrating low-carbon infrastructure, clean energy, and digital solutions, it is setting new benchmarks for ESG leadership in the aviation sector.
