Spain’s Cepsa signed an agreement with three Dutch firms to supply green ammonia to a terminal in Rotterdam’s port, as reported by Reuters on February 20. HES International, Gasunie Waterstof Holding, and Vopak LNG are developing Europe’s largest green ammonia terminal, the ACE Terminal in Rotterdam, with whom Cepsa has reached an agreement. The use of green ammonia, which is generated using hydrogen derived from renewable sources, can play a significant role in transporting green hydrogen to decarbonize industry. The partnership between the Spain and Dutch aims to establish a marine corridor within three years, and the scope of the deal includes sustainable marine fuels and hydrogen as the final product.
Last year, Cepsa announced that it had planned to invest USD3.3bn in one of the largest green hydrogen projects in Europe. The project aimed to produce 300,000 tons of hydrogen annually, which would be used to power the company’s refineries as well as local heavy shipping and haulage. The green hydrogen project was expected to comprise of two electrolyzers, totaling 2 gigawatts (GW), in the port cities of Huelva and Algeciras. The former was slated to be operational in 2026, while the latter was planned for completion in 2027.
