China Finds Cost-Effective Climate Strategy to Boost ESG Goals and Carbon Neutrality

China is implementing a strategic approach to its climate mitigation efforts, aligning these with its ESG and carbon neutral strategy to enhance sustainability. Through the use of advanced integrated modeling, researchers have identified cost-effective climate mitigation pathways (CMPs) that support China’s sustainable development goals (SDGs) and contribute to carbon neutrality.

The study examined 189 CMPs, including 9 primary pathways and 180 bundled options, assessing their impacts on all 17 SDGs. The findings show these pathways could significantly boost China’s SDG score, achieving up to 9.33 additional points by 2060 compared to a business-as-usual scenario. This cost-effective CMP optimizes the balance between carbon emissions reduction, sustainability trade-offs, and mitigation costs, providing a roadmap for China’s long-term sustainability.

China’s commitment to the UN 2030 Agenda has driven substantial progress in socioeconomic and environmental domains, but climate change remains a critical challenge. By pledging to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, China has set ambitious climate goals, which are reflected in these CMPs. Various policy strategies, including energy efficiency, shifts in energy mix, and carbon capture and storage (CCS), are embedded in these pathways, maximizing both environmental and social benefits.

The study’s results reveal that CMPs focusing on renewable energy transition, pollution reduction, and sustainable agriculture can advance key SDGs, particularly in clean energy, climate action, and sustainable cities. However, economic concerns such as lower government surplus and increased water protection costs pose challenges, highlighting the need for balanced policy frameworks. These CMPs are expected to guide policymakers, strengthening China’s ESG and carbon neutral strategy while advancing the nation’s sustainability objectives.
