The European Union (EU) is taking a major step in its carbon neutral strategy by allocating €422 million to expand alternative fuel infrastructure across Europe. This funding will support 39 projects under the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF), a key initiative within the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) aimed at accelerating the transition to zero-emission mobility and reinforcing the EU’s commitment to ESG goals.

The investment will significantly enhance the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), supporting the deployment of 4,900 new electric vehicle (EV) recharging points, with 2,500 dedicated to light-duty vehicles and 2,400 for heavy-duty trucks. These charging stations will be strategically placed to ensure seamless travel across major European transport corridors, reducing range anxiety for EV users and encouraging broader adoption of clean mobility solutions.

To further promote sustainable transportation, the EU will establish 35 new hydrogen refueling stations, catering to the increasing number of hydrogen-powered cars, buses, and freight vehicles. This expansion aligns with the EU Green Deal by supporting low-carbon fuel adoption and reducing emissions in long-haul transport sectors.

Beyond road transport, the funding will also modernize aviation and maritime infrastructure. Eight airports will transition their ground-handling services to electric power, cutting emissions from airport operations. Meanwhile, nine European ports will undergo sustainability-driven upgrades, improving their ESG compliance and advancing the shift toward clean maritime transport. Additionally, two new bunkering facilities will enable ammonia and methanol refueling, supporting the decarbonization of the shipping industry.

On February 4, 2025, EU Member States approved the funding, and the European Commission will officially adopt the award decision in the coming months. The European Climate, Infrastructure, and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) will oversee the grant agreements, ensuring smooth execution of the selected projects. This investment highlights the EU’s leadership in ESG policies, creating a sustainable transport network and accelerating the shift toward carbon neutrality.
