FRC’s Review Highlights Challenges in TCFD Compliance for ESG Strategy

The Financial Reporting Council (FRC) has released its 2023/24 Annual Review of Corporate Reporting, with a focus on sustainability and climate-related disclosures. The review emphasizes the importance of clear and concise reporting, especially regarding Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). The FRC noted an increase in compliance with TCFD guidelines, though some companies still struggle with clarity and consistency in reporting. Key reminders for companies include avoiding greenwashing, focusing on material disclosures, and adapting to evolving regulations like the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive. The FRC also urges companies to prepare for new International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) standards, expected to affect reporting in the UK soon.

As ESG and carbon-neutral strategies grow in importance, the FRC’s review serves as a guide for companies to align with these frameworks while avoiding pitfalls. Greenwashing, or overstating sustainability efforts, remains a significant concern. The FRC cautions companies to ensure that their focus on environmental initiatives does not overshadow core activities, especially those generating the most carbon emissions.

Additionally, the review highlights that companies should prioritize relevant information without over-disclosing. Although comprehensive sustainability reporting is becoming more established, companies must balance the need for transparency with the clarity of their disclosures. The FRC’s reminders come as the regulatory landscape for sustainability reporting continues to evolve, including more stringent requirements in both the UK and the EU.

This review is essential for companies preparing their sustainability reports, as it helps them navigate the complexities of ESG and carbon-neutral strategy disclosures while staying compliant with regulatory expectations.
