Governments at the U.N. climate summit in Dubai are unveiling a series of energy initiatives aimed at tackling the ongoing surge in planet-warming emissions, as reported by Reuters on December 2. A notable proposal involves more than 110 countries pledging to triple the world’s renewable energy capacity by 2030. Led by the European Union, the United States, and the host country UAE, the initiative seeks to incorporate this commitment as a global goal within the COP28 summit. While the push for increased renewable capacity is widespread, the challenges of securing substantial investments remain uncertain, given recent setbacks such as rising material costs and supply chain disruptions affecting clean energy projects.

Simultaneously, over 20 nations have signed a declaration to triple nuclear power capacity by 2050, emphasizing its role in achieving a “net zero” emissions future. Notable signatories include France, Belgium, Britain, and South Korea. The commitment not only seeks to expand nuclear capacity but also encourages concerted efforts to mobilize investments for the nuclear energy sector. As the COP28 summit unfolds, a critical decision looms on whether nations will collectively agree, for the first time, to gradually “phase out” global fossil fuel consumption, with a focus on ending unabated coal power and halting financing for new coal-fired plants. These initiatives underscore the increasing pressure on affluent nations and international financial institutions to make substantial investments in renewable energy, particularly in regions like Africa that have struggled to attract capital for such projects.
