Ireland has pledged €15 million ($16.3 million) to Brazil’s Amazon Fund, reinforcing global efforts to combat deforestation and promote sustainable development in the world’s largest tropical rainforest. The funding will be distributed over the next three years, according to Brazil’s Environment Ministry.
With this commitment, Ireland becomes the eighth country to support the Amazon Fund, joining Norway, Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Switzerland, and Japan. The fund, managed by Brazil’s development bank, has already invested $534.6 million in 123 projects focused on deforestation prevention, environmental monitoring, and sustainable land use.
“The Amazon Fund plays a crucial role in Brazil’s strategy to combat illegal logging and promote reforestation,” said Brazil’s Environment Minister Marina Silva during a meeting in São Paulo with Ireland’s Transportation Minister Sean Canney.
The Amazon rainforest, often called the “lungs of the planet,” is a crucial carbon sink, helping to absorb global CO2 emissions. However, illegal deforestation and land degradation threaten its ecological balance. By supporting the fund, Ireland is reinforcing its commitment to international climate goals and ESG principles.
“The Irish government has emphasized the importance of international cooperation in preserving the Amazon, a vital component in the fight against climate change,” noted Brazil’s Environment Ministry.
Ireland’s funding aligns with its broader carbon neutral strategy, which includes international climate financing and sustainability partnerships. The investment will support deforestation monitoring, reforestation programs, and initiatives that empower local communities to adopt sustainable practices.
As global awareness of deforestation’s impact on climate intensifies, Ireland’s contribution to the Amazon Fund marks a significant step in fostering ESG-driven environmental policies and securing long-term sustainability for the rainforest.
