Ports of Jersey and Jersey Electricity are taking a major step forward in their ESG commitments with a large-scale solar energy project at Jersey Airport. A 450 kWp solar photovoltaic array will be installed on the roof of the airport cargo terminal, covering 3,200m² and feeding directly into the electricity grid. This initiative is a significant milestone in the Island’s carbon neutral strategy, expanding renewable energy capacity while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Once completed, the solar installation will be the third largest of Jersey Electricity’s rooftop solar projects, generating enough power to supply nearly 70 homes for the next 25 years. It will also contribute to Jersey Electricity’s goal of increasing total locally-generated renewable electricity to more than 2 MWp-equivalent to powering over 300 homes. Additionally, the airport will introduce electric vehicle (EV) chargers for Ports of Jersey staff and business partners, reinforcing its commitment to low-carbon transport solutions.

Matt Thomas, CEO of Ports of Jersey, emphasized the importance of collaboration in achieving sustainability targets. “This project is a key initiative in our Planet and People Plan, where we aim to become one of the first UK airports to reach net zero in operations. Partnering with Jersey Electricity helps us harness technology to meet the targets set in the government’s Carbon Neutral Roadmap,” he stated.

Jersey Electricity’s CEO, Chris Ambler, highlighted the broader impact of the initiative. “This project plays a vital role in increasing on-Island renewable energy capacity. Our goal is to power 5,000 homes with locally harnessed solar energy by 2030. Rooftop solar, combined with selected ground-mount projects, will help achieve this ambition,” he said.

Jersey Electricity is actively seeking more business partners for future solar projects. By expanding renewable infrastructure, Jersey is strengthening its ESG leadership and advancing its carbon neutral strategy. This partnership serves as a model for how businesses can collaborate to build a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
