Sports company PUMA has been ranked first among 250 major fashion brands and retailers in the “What Fuels Fashion?” report by Fashion Revolution. This report evaluates companies’ efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions within their operations and supply chains. The ranking is based on five key sections: accountability, decarbonization, energy procurement, financing decarbonization, and just transition and advocacy.
PUMA achieved an overall score of 75%, the highest among all reviewed companies. The report, however, emphasizes that the fashion industry is still far behind in meeting climate targets and reducing emissions effectively.
Anne-Laure Descours, Chief Sourcing Officer at PUMA, acknowledged the honor of being ranked the best performer but stressed the need for continued efforts in their decarbonization journey. “We believe that the report should also be seen as a wake-up call. Much more needs to be done to get all stakeholders to work together to decarbonize our industry and our supply chains. We need to come together to find the solutions needed to achieve our climate goals,” Descours stated.
In 2023, PUMA set new greenhouse gas reduction targets approved by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). These ambitious goals were established after PUMA had reached its previous targets seven years ahead of schedule. By 2030, PUMA aims to cut its absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 90% from a 2017 baseline year. Additionally, the company committed to reducing absolute Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions from its supply chain and logistics by 33% compared to 2017.
PUMA’s commitment to ESG principles and robust CSR initiatives underscores its leadership in sustainability reporting within the fashion industry. The company’s proactive approach in setting and achieving science-based targets highlights the importance of integrating sustainable practices into business strategies to meet global climate goals.
