China’s Tsingshan Holding Group is making a significant investment of USD233.2m to establish a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) plant in northern Chile, a move that aligns with the global shift towards electric vehicles, as reported by Reuters on October 16. This strategic decision is part of Chile’s efforts to tap into its vast lithium reserves and create a robust electric vehicle supply chain. The plant, expected to be operational by May 2025, aims to produce 120,000 metric tons of LFP annually, positioning itself as a cost-effective alternative to nickel cobalt manganese cells used in electric vehicle batteries.
