UN Nature Meetings Finalizes $200B Plan for Biodiversity by 2030

Global governments have finalized a landmark agreement to mobilize $200 billion annually by 2030 to support biodiversity conservation, aligning with international ESG and carbon neutral strategies. The deal, reached in Rome on February 27, 2025, is a major step in implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF), reinforcing financial mechanisms and monitoring frameworks for global conservation efforts.

The agreement sets progressive funding targets, committing $20 billion per year by 2025, increasing to $30 billion annually by 2030 in international biodiversity finance. These resources will be allocated through permanent financial instruments, strengthening conservation efforts and closing the biodiversity funding gap. UN officials emphasize that multilateral cooperation is key to achieving long-term sustainability goals.

A critical component of the agreement is the launch of the Cali Fund, a dedicated financial mechanism that will secure private sector contributions from industries that use digital sequence information (DSI) from genetic resources. At least 50% of the fund’s proceeds will be directed toward indigenous and local communities, recognizing their role in biodiversity preservation.

To ensure transparency and accountability, governments also adopted a new monitoring and reporting framework to track progress on the KMGBF’s 23 targets and four overarching goals. The system enables data-driven decision-making and allows global policymakers to measure biodiversity protection efforts effectively.

As biodiversity financing takes center stage, businesses, civil society, and indigenous groups will play a key role in conservation strategies. The agreement sets a foundation for long-term sustainability investments, reinforcing the connection between climate resilience, ESG integration, and carbon neutrality.

The $200 billion biodiversity funding plan marks a significant global commitment to protecting ecosystems, enhancing sustainability financing, and advancing carbon-neutral strategies for a greener future.
