Zurich Insurance Group has signed a multi-year carbon removal agreement with Nellie Technologies, reinforcing its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) commitments and advancing its carbon neutral strategy. This deal marks a significant step forward in commercial-scale carbon sequestration, supporting Zurich’s long-term decarbonization goals. Nellie Technologies has spent three years developing its bioengineered CO2 removal system, which is now transitioning from pilot operations to full-scale deployment. The system uses biomass to absorb carbon dioxide, then converts it into biochar for agricultural use in the UK. This process ensures near-total control over carbon sequestration, making it a scalable and commercially viable solution that aligns with the growing demand for practical solutions to combat climate change. 

Zurich’s investment in carbon removal aligns perfectly with its broader strategy to first minimize emissions through energy efficiency and renewable energy investments before turning to sequestration to address any remaining emissions. Nellie emphasized this approach, stating, “Removing CO2 should only happen when an organization has done all it can to prevent their emissions in the first place. And this is exactly what’s happening here.” This highlights Zurich’s dedication to a holistic, responsible approach to carbon management.
