Dutch Companies Lead in CSRD Readiness Amid ESG Reporting Challenges

According to PwC’s Global CSRD Survey 2024, 79% of Dutch companies are confident they will be ready to report on their sustainability performance in line with the new European Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), a significant lead over the global average of 63%. CSRD mandates companies to disclose non-financial information, enhancing transparency in their ESG strategies.

Dutch companies’ optimism stems from substantial progress in CSRD implementation. Over half have completed key preparatory steps, such as confirming reporting options and conducting the mandatory double materiality analysis. In contrast, only a third of companies globally have reached this stage. Despite this progress, challenges remain, particularly in data availability and quality, value chain complexity, and human resources.

Over 50% of Dutch respondents cite these as significant obstacles, highlighting the comprehensive nature of CSRD which requires collecting, verifying, and consolidating new types of data. The survey also reveals that CSRD is driving a greater focus on sustainability in business decisions, with two-thirds of Dutch companies reporting increased consideration of sustainability in their decision-making processes. This involvement extends beyond traditional sustainability departments to finance and board members, reflecting CSRD’s impact on corporate governance. While Dutch companies are less optimistic about the economic benefits of CSRD, they recognize its potential for improving environmental and social responsibility, stakeholder engagement, and corporate governance.

To navigate the challenges of CSRD and leverage it for enhanced ESG performance, companies should mobilize multidisciplinary teams, conduct thorough double materiality analyses, define clear ambitions, and focus on efficient data collection and reporting processes. By prioritizing these steps, Dutch companies can effectively implement CSRD and strengthen their sustainability strategies.
