Equinor, a Norwegian multinational energy company specializing in oil and gas exploration and production, and British oil and gas giant BP have submitted a joint proposal to expand their Beacon Wind project, which would provide additional offshore wind energy to the state of New York, as reported by Reuters on January 27. The proposed 1,360-megawatt (MW) project, located 60 miles from the eastern coast of Long Island, has the capacity to supply power to about one million homes in New York.

Equinor and BP have ongoing offshore wind initiatives in New York, consisting of Empire Wind 1 and 2, and Beacon Wind 1, which will have a combined capacity of 3,300 MW. These projects are expected to generate enough electricity for two million homes and over USD1bn in economic output for the state. The completion of the project represents a significant achievement for the Equinor-BP partnership and will contribute to Equinor’s goal of installing 12-16 GW of renewable capacity by 2030. These projects are also expected to assist New York in meeting its target of producing 70% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
