In a significant move to deepen global climate action, the European Union and China have jointly committed to submit new 2035 climate targets covering all sectors and greenhouse gases before the upcoming COP30 summit. This major pledge was made during the EU-China Summit in Beijing, an event held amidst the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two powers and the 10th anniversary of the landmark Paris Agreement. The joint statement marks a crucial new phase in green cooperation, reaffirming their commitment to renewed global leadership on climate action.

Leaders from both sides emphatically reaffirmed their support for the Paris Agreement and the UNFCCC, identifying them as the central pillars of the global climate framework. They stressed the importance of policy stability and continuity in a turbulent international context, reiterating the principle of “common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities” in addressing climate change. The joint declaration underscored that “Green is the defining color of China-EU cooperation,” recognizing the vast potential for collaboration in green transition efforts.

Among the key joint commitments, the EU and China will work to submit updated 2035 Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) that are fully aligned with the Paris Agreement’s long-term temperature goals. They also pledged strong support for Brazil’s role as host of COP30, aiming for “ambitious, equitable, balanced and inclusive outcomes”. Furthermore, the two economic giants committed to accelerating the global deployment of renewable energy and ensuring broader access to green technologies, particularly for developing nations.

Their collaboration extends to enhancing climate adaptation efforts at all levels, as well as specific initiatives in energy transition, methane management, carbon markets, and the development of low-carbon technologies. This comprehensive commitment aims to reinforce multilateral cooperation, promote sustainable development, and contribute to poverty eradication, signaling a robust and united approach from two of the world’s largest emitters on critical global environmental challenges. The focus on a “just transition” further highlights their intent to ensure climate action benefits all segments of society.
