Indonesia has taken a major leap toward its ESG commitments and carbon neutral strategy with the launch of the Cirata Floating Solar Farm, Southeast Asia’s largest floating photovoltaic installation. Located in West Java, the 192 MW facility generates enough clean electricity to power 50,000 homes, helping the country move closer to its net-zero emissions target by 2060.

Spanning 250 hectares on the Cirata Reservoir, the project is a $100 million collaboration between the Indonesian government and Masdar, an Abu Dhabi-based renewable energy firm. The floating design—featuring 340,000 solar panels—utilizes water surfaces instead of land, reducing environmental disruption while enhancing solar efficiency through natural cooling.

The Cirata solar farm is expected to prevent 214,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually, directly supporting Indonesia’s goal to produce 100 GW of clean energy by 2040. It is part of a larger $1.56 billion renewable energy package, including solar and geothermal projects totaling nearly 380 MW. President Prabowo Subianto, who inaugurated these initiatives, emphasized their importance for energy independence and sustainable development.

Beyond environmental benefits, the project fosters green job creation, supports energy self-sufficiency, and positions Indonesia as a regional leader in floating solar technology. With over 100 reservoirs and 500 lakes, Indonesia has immense potential to scale similar projects—60 more floating PV systems are in planning.

Cirata also aligns with Indonesia’s grid modernization efforts. Backed by the UN, the Java-Bali-Madura grid is being upgraded into a smart grid, enabling efficient integration of renewable sources.

As the country tackles fossil fuel dependence and nickel mining impacts, Cirata demonstrates a scalable model for low-carbon growth. This project reinforces Indonesia’s global role in clean energy innovation—paving the way for sustainable power systems that align with both ESG principles and a net-zero future.
