The U.S. government has announced a significant investment of $635 million to support the expansion of zero-emission electric vehicle (EV) charging and hydrogen refueling infrastructure. This initiative, led by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), aims to enhance the country’s ESG efforts and accelerate its carbon neutral strategy by funding 49 projects across 27 states, four federally recognized Tribes, and the District of Columbia.

The funding will facilitate the installation of over 11,500 EV charging ports and several alternatives fueling stations in key locations, including urban and rural communities. These projects are strategically positioned to support the National Zero-Emission Freight Corridor Strategy, ensuring a seamless transition to sustainable transportation.

A notable project includes the Port Authority of Houston’s $24.8 million hydrogen fueling station designed for heavy-duty trucks in Bayport, Texas. This station will offer public access and high-throughput capabilities, setting a precedent for future clean energy initiatives. Additionally, the California Energy Commission will receive $55.9 million to fund 21 public EV charging stations and a hydrogen refueling hub for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, further advancing the state’s carbon neutral strategy.

The investment is expected to create thousands of jobs, stimulate innovation, and promote equitable access to clean transportation options across the U.S. The initiative aligns with federal ESG goals by fostering sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector.

Jeff Marootian, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, highlighted the broader impact of the investment, stating that it will “build on efforts to develop a 21st-century energy workforce and enhance the grid’s capacity to power zero-emission fueling infrastructure.” By prioritizing ESG principles and a carbon neutral strategy, the U.S. continues to lead the global transition towards sustainable transportation solutions.
