London-based pension scheme Nest has awarded a $750 million Sustainable Timberland Investment Mandate to BTG Pactual Timberland Investment Group (TIG), marking its second major timberland allocation in under a year.
The move follows Nest’s initial $750 million mandate to Campbell Global, J.P. Morgan Asset Management’s timberland investment advisory arm. For the record, with over 13 million members, Nest is the UK’s largest workplace pension scheme by membership.
Nest said the latest allocation aims to enhance portfolio diversification while supporting sustainable forestry as a long-term, risk-adjusted investment. Properly managed timberland, the scheme noted, offers both financial returns and environmental benefits, such as biodiversity preservation, ecosystem protection, and providing renewable materials for construction and biodegradable packaging.
Founded in 2013 through BTG Pactual’s acquisition of TTG Brasil and Regions Timberland Group, BTG Pactual TIG is one of the world’s largest timberland managers, overseeing 2.6 million acres across the U.S. and Latin America and managing $7.3 billion in assets and commitments. Nest cited the firm’s “strong track record in managing timberland assets at scale while prioritising environmental stewardship” as a key factor in its selection.
Gerrity Lansing, Head of BTG Pactual TIG, said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to “long-term value creation and sustainable land management,” adding that the strategy will leverage the firm’s large-scale platform, on-the-ground expertise, and sustainability standards.
Looking ahead, Nest’s strategy reflects a broader commitment to integrating natural capital into its long-term investment approach. By appointing two specialised timberland managers, the pension scheme is opening its portfolio to resilient and climate-conscious assets that not only target stable, risk-adjusted returns but also align with global sustainability objectives.
