sales@senecaesg.comA Belgian farmer is suing TotalEnergies [TTE:FP], a French oil and gas company, in the Tournai commercial court, seeking compensation for climate change-related damage to his farm, as reported by Reuters on March 13. The farmer, Hugues Falys, claims that TotalEnergies, as one of the top CO2-emitting companies globally, is partly responsible for extreme weather events that harmed his cattle farm between 2016 and 2022. He argues that the company’s failure to comply with Belgian law, which mandates reparations for damage caused, warrants legal action.
Falys and three campaign groups are demanding TotalEnergiesto halt investments in new fossil fuel projects and reduce its oil and gas production by 47% by 2030. The lawsuit represents the first climate change-related legal action in Belgium targeting a multinational corporation. If damages are awarded, Falysintends to donate them to a sustainable farming organization in Belgium. TotalEnergies declined to comment on the case.
