Cambodia is taking significant steps toward a carbon-neutral future with the development of the Climate Change Strategic Plan 2024-2033 (CCCSP 2024-2033). Supported by key partners like UNICEF and the Cambodia Climate Change Alliance (CCCA), this new strategy aims to guide the nation towards climate-smart development over the next decade, reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability and aligning with global ESG goals.
Building on the successes and lessons learned from the previous strategic plan (2014-2023), Cambodia has made notable progress in implementing sectoral climate actions, updating its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and developing a Long-Term Strategy for Carbon Neutrality. However, challenges remain, particularly in capacity building and securing the necessary funding.
The new strategy aligns with Cambodia’s broader climate goals, including the Pentagonal Strategy’s vision of achieving carbon neutrality with 60% forest cover by 2050. The Ministry of Environment, led by Minister Eang Sophalleth, emphasizes the importance of clean and renewable energy investments, waste management improvements, and afforestation efforts, such as planting at least one million trees annually.
Cambodia’s updated climate strategy is designed to address emerging climate issues, support vulnerable populations, and promote sustainable development. The plan also focuses on enhancing resilience, improving climate governance, and ensuring the well-being of society, the environment, and the economy.
As Cambodia prepares to present the final draft of the CCCSP 2024-2033, the nation remains committed to reducing emissions and advancing its carbon-neutral strategy, setting a strong example for ESG and sustainability reporting on the global stage.
