China’s First ESG Reporting Standards Aim for Global Alignment

China has launched its inaugural Corporate Sustainability Disclosure Standards—Basic Standards, marking a major step in advancing its ESG practices and promoting transparency and accountability. Unveiled on December 17, 2024, by the Ministry of Finance (MOF) alongside nine other government departments, these standards aim to harmonize corporate sustainability disclosures and align them with global benchmarks.

Building on an Exposure Draft introduced in May 2024, the Basic Standards provide businesses with a framework to voluntarily adopt sustainability reporting practices. This initiative is part of a larger national strategy to establish a unified framework for corporate sustainability reporting, with a clear roadmap for full implementation by 2030.

The standards focus on driving greater corporate responsibility and aligning Chinese companies with international ESG benchmarks, fostering transparency crucial for global investors. The framework includes detailed guidelines on sustainability-related disclosures, helping businesses better communicate their environmental, social, and governance impacts.

This milestone reflects China’s long-term commitment to integrating ESG factors into its corporate sector. The government’s efforts align domestic regulations with international practices, supporting global investment decisions and sustainable development goals.

China’s focus on sustainability began with its recognition of the critical role ESG factors play in modern business. Over recent years, the government has steadily worked toward creating a national system for corporate sustainability reporting. The MOF’s draft standards earlier in 2024 marked a pivotal moment, incorporating stakeholder feedback to refine the approach.

With the introduction of these standards, China reinforces its position as a global player in sustainability, paving the way for Chinese companies to adopt robust carbon neutral strategies and enhanced corporate responsibility practices. The initiative is set to transform sustainability reporting across industries, ensuring greater alignment with global ESG expectations.
