At Sustainability LIVE: Climate Week NYC, executives from Dell, Zurich Insurance, Signify, and Verizon outlined their approaches to integrating ESG principles into business operations, showcasing the intersection of sustainability and corporate strategy.

The panel emphasized defining ESG within organizational contexts. Dell’s Cassandra Garber described ESG as a “business imperative,” integrating sustainability metrics alongside revenue as success indicators. Zurich Insurance’s Linda Freiner distinguished between ESG priorities and operational sustainability, while Signify’s Maurice Loosschilder highlighted the company’s “Brighter Lives, Better Worlds” strategy, merging environmental goals with evolving EU regulations.

Embedding ESG accountability was a key theme. Dell employs its “ESG OMG” model to assign specific responsibilities within business units. Signify ties sustainability metrics to executive incentives, using circular economy goals to drive action. Verizon engages its workforce with sustainability targets tied to employee performance, empowering over 60,000 team members globally.

The panel also tackled ESG challenges. Internally, aligning ESG with other priorities like digital transformation poses hurdles, while externally, issues such as supply chain transparency and client net-zero targets demand innovative solutions. Zurich, for example, supports clients with advisory services to manage climate risks.

Stakeholder engagement emerged as vital for ESG success. Signify collaborates across value chains to drive sector-wide change, while Zurich enhances its credibility through tangible internal actions, such as reducing air travel. Dell and Verizon emphasized the role of employees in integrating ESG into operations.

The discussion concluded with future priorities. Zurich focuses on climate resilience, Signify on reducing emissions through circular innovations, Dell on long-term sustainability targets, and Verizon on leveraging 5G for sustainable solutions.

This panel illustrated how embedding ESG strategies bolsters resilience and innovation, providing a roadmap for organizations pursuing carbon-neutral strategies in an evolving global market.
