In an effort to facilitate recovery from the devastating Bush Creek East wildfire, the Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) has approved $30,000 to cover tipping fees for 18 properties in North Shuswap. Samaritan’s Purse, a humanitarian organization, aims to assist with the cleanup but lacks the funds to cover these fees.

The Bush Creek East Fire, the most destructive in the region’s history, affected 170 properties, with many experiencing total loss. While most properties were insured and have been cleaned up, 18 remain due to lack of insurance coverage. Efforts by CSRD, the province, and organizations like the North Shuswap Disaster Relief Society continue to support recovery.

CSRD’s chief executive officer, John MacLean, emphasized the importance of safely cleaning up these properties for societal, personal, and environmental benefits, including personal healing for property owners and reducing contamination risks. The CSRD board unanimously approved using funds from the Disaster Mitigation Reserve and the Electoral Area F Grant-in-Aid Fund for this purpose.

Samaritan’s Purse assessed the 18 properties and is ready to assist with the cleanup, highlighting the need for sustainable development and adherence to ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles in disaster recovery.

Electoral Area F Director Jay Simpson expressed satisfaction with the board’s decision, noting that supporting these core community members is essential for rebuilding and achieving a new normal. Simpson assured that there are sufficient grant-in-aid funds to support other projects in the North Shuswap communities.

The CSRD’s commitment to sustainability development and ESG underscores its dedication to helping the community recover from this devastating event, ensuring a safer and more resilient future for all.
