Dutch energy company Eneco intends to construct a hydrogen plant in the Rotterdam port area that will operate entirely on renewable energy, as reported by Reuters on November 22. The company has submitted a planning application for an electrolyser, a hydrogen production facility powered by electricity that splits water into hydrogen and oxygen. This marks a departure from current hydrogen plants, which typically rely on natural gas and emit substantial amounts of CO2.
The move aligns with the goal of generating emission-free green hydrogen, a crucial component of the energy transition. The Dutch government aims to boost green hydrogen production in the country to 4 gigawatts by 2030. Eneco plans to commence construction in 2026, with the plant anticipated to become operational in 2029, boasting a capacity of 800 megawatts sourced from renewable energy derived from solar parks and wind farms.
