The European Parliament has adopted new rules that grant consumers the power to have their worn-out household products repaired by producers, even if the guarantee has expired, as reported by Reuters on April 23. The new law applies to any common household appliances deemed “repairable” under EU law and sold with the bloc, ranging from washing machines to smartphones. Consumers will gain the right to have their malfunctioned products repaired or replaced within the warranty period, which lasts at least two years under existing EU laws, and get a one-year extension to their warranty if the product breaks while under warranty. Furthermore, the legislation stipulates that companies must offer repairs at a “reasonable” price so that customers will not be intentionally discouraged from getting their products fixed. Manufacturers are also prohibited from using contractual clauses, hardware, or software techniques that impede repairs.

The “Right to Repair” legislation marks a significant step forward in empowering consumers in the battle against climate change. The European Commission estimates that 35 million tons of waste and 260 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions are generated each year, as the result of still-usable consumer goods being thrown away. The new rules are poised to make repair services more accessible and affordable for consumers. Additionally, the EU is also planning to launch an online platform to help consumers find local repair shops and sellers of used products, extending the lifecycle of products and promoting sustainability.
