Germany’s Federal Ministry of Finance has confirmed that it is preparing to reinstate its Sustainable Finance Beirat, the national advisory board tasked with guiding the country’s sustainable finance strategy. The future of the expert group had been uncertain in the aftermath of the recent federal elections.

According to a ministry spokesperson, this decision has been made to position Germany as a pioneer when it comes to issues related to financing sustainable investments. One of its main goals will focus on reducing bureaucracy and streamlining reporting requirements to accelerate the financing of sustainable business models and clean technologies.

The advisory board is expected to be operational before the end of the year and will help position Germany at the forefront of sustainable investment policy.

The Sustainable Finance Beirat (SFB), first established in 2019, is Germany’s official Sustainable Finance Advisory Committee. The board is an independent, multi-stakeholder body founded by the federal government to shape its sustainable finance strategy. It comprises several experts from the financial sector, real economy, academia, and civil society to advise on how to build Germany into a leading center for sustainable finance.

The key roles and activities of SFB:

  • Guides the German government on sustainable finance policymaking and implementation, with a focus on market stability and international alignment
  • Plays a key role in improving Germany’s Sustainable Finance Strategy, including inputs to EU frameworks (e.g., SFDR, CSRD), standard-setting, disclosure requirements, and risk management
  • Issues recommendation papers and reports. For instance, they have urged improvements in ESG engagement and issued proposals on EU disclosure standards.
  • Represents Germany in global sustainable finance platforms such as the EU’s International Platform on Sustainable Finance and the Network for Greening the Financial System
  • Focuses on mobilizing private capital for climate, biodiversity, and ESG-aligned investments

In sum, over the last years, the Sustainable Finance Beirat has played a key role in shaping Germany’s green finance landscape, offering recommendations that contributed to both national and EU-level regulatory developments.

From this perspective, the reinstatement of the Sustainable Finance Beirat signals a clear attempt by Germany to align financial policy with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) objectives as Europe prepares to intensify its climate efforts and green economic transition.
