Google has introduced three new Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) as part of its Google Maps Platform, offering third-party companies access to valuable environmental data on air quality, solar potential, and pollen levels across numerous locations in over 100 countries, as reported by ESG News on August 29. This initiative aims to make environmental information more accessible and actionable for individuals, businesses, and cities in order to help them reduce their environmental impact. One of these APIs is the Solar API, which provides rooftop solar installers and other similar businesses with insights into the amount of sunlight a particular location receives. By utilizing this information, companies can assess the feasibility of solar installations and create customized solar energy strategies.

The Solar API builds upon Google’s Project Sunroof, which uses advanced 3D imaging to analyze local structures and weather patterns to assess solar potential. It was designed to help businesses create positive climate impact at scale and adapt to a climate change, according to an insider from Google. The people also disclosed that companies including Tesla , Zillow and solar-design company Aurora are listed as potential customers. Besides, the other new mapping products also have notable environmental significance. The Air Quality API is another new addition, offering pollution data and heatmaps for more than 100 countries. This tool can assist individuals in making informed travel decisions and enable governments to enhance air quality monitoring and enforcement efforts. Additionally, the Pollen API provides allergen counts in over 65 countries, helping people with allergies make healthier choices.
