GRI Launches Consultation on Updated Labor Standards to Strengthen ESG and Carbon Neutral Strategy Reporting

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) has opened a global public consultation on two revised labor standards Diversity and Inclusion (GRI 405) and Non-Discrimination and Equal Opportunity (GRI 406), as part of a sweeping update to its labor disclosure framework. The consultation is open until 15 September 2025, inviting feedback from stakeholders across industries to ensure relevance, feasibility, and impact.

The updates aim to align corporate ESG reporting with International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions, emphasizing transparency, fairness, and workplace accountability. These standards are part of a four-phase Labor Standards Review supporting a more human rights-based approach to due diligence and sustainable employment practices.

Key Revisions:

  • GRI 405 (Diversity and Inclusion): Adds expanded metrics on how organizations integrate diversity into strategy, including executive accountability and operational practices.
  • GRI 406 (Non-Discrimination and Equal Opportunity): Calls for detailed disclosures on both direct and indirect discrimination, including incidents and corrective measures, particularly for under-represented or vulnerable groups.

Both standards promote more equitable, inclusive work environments, advancing ESG values and strengthening the social pillar of a company’s carbon neutral strategy by ensuring decent work and dignity across value chains.

Stakeholders can submit feedback via an official questionnaire. Two global webinars—scheduled for 2 July and 8 July—will explain the proposed changes, featuring experts from the ILO and the International Organisation of Employers (IOE).

This initiative forms part of GRI’s broader effort to revise eight labor-related Topic Standards by mid-2026, further enhancing transparency and integrity in ESG disclosures. Executives, investors, and civil society leaders are urged to participate and help shape the future of responsible labor reporting.
