The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) has introduced its new GRI-ESRS Linkage Service, aimed at helping companies align their sustainability reporting with both GRI standards and the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). This service is designed to ease compliance with the European Union’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which has significantly expanded sustainability reporting requirements for companies across various industries.
GRI standards are among the most widely accepted frameworks for ESG reporting, helping businesses communicate their environmental, social, and governance impacts clearly and consistently. The CSRD, which came into effect in 2024, requires more than 50,000 companies—up from around 12,000—to report detailed information about their impacts on the environment, social issues, and human rights. This shift has made it increasingly important for companies to align their reporting practices with multiple frameworks, particularly GRI and ESRS.
The GRI-ESRS Linkage Service builds on the interoperability that GRI and the European Financial Reporting Advisory Group (EFRAG) have achieved between their respective standards. The service offers detailed feedback on a company’s GRI content index, highlights GRI-ESRS linkages, and provides suggestions for improving disclosures. It also identifies areas where GRI standards and ESRS requirements do not align, allowing companies to better prepare their sustainability statements.
By using this service, companies can avoid the burden of double reporting and ensure they meet the more stringent requirements of the CSRD. This is particularly beneficial for companies already using GRI standards, as it simplifies the process of adapting to the new EU regulations, which are critical for demonstrating transparency and accountability in ESG performance.
