The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) has introduced two new courses designed to help sustainability professionals enhance their expertise in climate and nature-related corporate reporting. Available through the GRI Academy, these courses, titled “Climate Reporting with GRI and IFRS Standards” and “GRI-TNFD Interoperability: A Guide for Nature-Related Reporting,” aim to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to address the growing demand for transparency in environmental disclosures.

These courses come in response to the growing need for companies to disclose climate and nature impacts, helping them meet global transparency and sustainability demands. The “Climate Reporting with GRI and IFRS Standards” course is particularly timely, following the GRI’s release of its new climate standard, “GRI 102: Climate Change,” last month. This standard introduces new disclosure requirements, such as reporting on climate adaptation plans, emissions reduction targets, and the use of carbon credits. The course also covers the IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards, launched in 2023, of which 36 jurisdictions are already adopting.

The nature-related course focuses on the GRI’s updated “GRI 101: Biodiversity 2024” and the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) recommendations. Both organizations collaborated to create a joint interoperability tool to help companies report on biodiversity and nature-related risks. This course provides practical insights on how to utilize this tool for streamlined reporting, while also highlighting key similarities and differences between the GRI and TNFD frameworks.

Paul Broekhof, Director of Education at GRI, emphasized that these courses are designed to equip sustainability and corporate reporting professionals with the skills needed to address the intensifying global sustainability challenges. By offering in-depth knowledge on climate and nature-related disclosures, the courses aim to help organizations enhance their reporting processes and meet the growing expectations for transparency.

The two new courses are a critical step in supporting companies and professionals as they navigate the increasingly complex landscape of climate and nature-related corporate reporting, contributing to a more sustainable and accountable business environment.
