The Irish Defence Forces are set to undergo a massive refurbishment and building scheme estimated to cost €355 million over the next three years. This Infrastructure Development Plan (IDP) aims to modernize military facilities and achieve a carbon-neutral status by integrating advanced sustainability measures.

Colonel Damien McEvoy is spearheading this project, which includes refurbishing historic structures like McKee Barracks in Dublin while preserving their architectural integrity. The initiative also encompasses significant upgrades at Haulbowline Naval Base and other key locations, introducing modern systems such as heat pumps and solar panels to meet stringent climate action energy targets.

A primary focus of the IDP is to reduce carbon emissions by 51% by 2030, aligning with the European Union’s Green Deal. The military has already achieved a 38.7% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to 2016-2018 figures, thanks to an effective climate action roadmap and energy management system. Moving forward, the project will explore transitioning military transport to hydrogen fuel, further supporting its sustainability goals.

Despite challenges, including cost constraints and a shortage of building professionals, the Defence Forces are committed to this extensive ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) effort. By combining heritage preservation with innovative carbon-neutral strategies, the IDP sets a benchmark for sustainable development within the military sector.
