On September 9, 2025, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) announced a strategic partnership to develop unified global standards for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions accounting. This collaboration marks a significant step toward creating consistent, high-quality emissions reporting frameworks across industries and geographies.
The core goal of the partnership is to harmonize the existing ISO 1406X standards with the GHG Protocol’s widely used Corporate Standard, Scope 2 Guidance, and Scope 3 Standard. By aligning their methodologies, the two organizations aim to eliminate duplication, reduce confusion, and improve consistency in how emissions are measured and reported. A key deliverable of this partnership will be a co-developed product carbon footprint standard, enabling companies to gain clearer insights into emissions across their entire value chains.
This unification effort is particularly timely as businesses, investors, regulators, and policymakers increasingly rely on credible emissions data to make climate-related decisions. Fragmented standards have long posed challenges for comparability and trust in emissions disclosures. The harmonized standards will serve as a common language for carbon accounting, making it easier for organizations to comply with regulations, track progress toward climate goals, and meet stakeholder expectations.
The collaboration also signals a more inclusive and transparent approach to standard-setting. Both ISO and GHG Protocol have committed to engaging with global stakeholders throughout the process. This will ensure that the new standards are not only scientifically rigorous but also practical and applicable across sectors and regions.
Ultimately, this partnership represents a major step forward in global climate governance. By providing a streamlined, credible framework for emissions accounting, it empowers businesses and governments to take more effective climate action and paves the way for accelerated progress toward net-zero targets.
