Israel Urged to Develop ESG and Carbon Neutral Strategy for Plastics Industry

Israel’s $2.6 billion plastics industry—comprising around 500 manufacturers—is being urged to adopt a robust ESG and carbon neutral strategy to curb its growing carbon footprint. At the heart of this push lies the country’s piping sector, a major consumer of plastic materials such as polyethylene, PVC, HDPE, and PP.

Experts highlight a transformative opportunity: repurposing discarded plastic pipes as high-quality raw materials through advanced chemical and physical recycling. These innovations allow old infrastructure components to re-enter the production cycle, dramatically reducing emissions and dependency on virgin resources.

To realize this vision, stakeholders call for a multi-layered national strategy focused on:

  1. Investing in next-gen recycling technologies that break down plastics into reusable raw inputs.
  1. Building efficient collection and sorting systems capable of differentiating plastic types and streamlining their return to manufacturing.
  1. Implementing economic incentives such as tax relief and green subsidies to encourage sustainable manufacturing.
  1. Innovating reuse processes that adapt recycled plastics for new applications, ensuring quality and structural integrity.

The sector contributes about 6% of Israel’s industrial exports, but its environmental costs are rising. A circular approach, centered on recycling and reuse, would not only reduce emissions but also lower production costs and boost brand value in a market where ESG compliance and environmental responsibility are increasingly demanded.

The Ministry of Environmental Protection is encouraged to partner with industry leaders to drive regulatory reforms and support a national pipeline for circular plastics. This aligns with global carbon neutral strategy goals and advances Israel’s environmental diplomacy.

Ultimately, embedding sustainability into core industrial operations could position Israel’s piping and plastics sector as a leader in the global circular economy, turning waste into opportunity while contributing to a cleaner, greener future.
