The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is facing significant reputational challenges after a contentious decision in April to advocate for increased use of carbon credits to offset greenhouse gas emissions. This move, perceived by some as a sudden policy shift not aligned with established procedures, has sparked widespread criticism and concerns about greenwashing.
In a confidential letter dated June 20, the Technical Council, responsible for monitoring SBTi, expressed serious reservations. They warned that if not swiftly addressed, these issues could severely impair SBTi’s effectiveness as a global standard setter for corporate climate goals.
The controversy prompted calls for greater transparency and accountability within SBTi. Suggestions from the Technical Council include regular publication of meeting minutes, agendas, and codes of conduct. They also recommend robust procedures to monitor external influences on decision-making.
SBTi’s leadership has since attempted to clarify their position on carbon credits. Despite these efforts, questions persist about the organization’s internal governance and decision-making processes. The incident has also reignited debates about the role of carbon credits in corporate sustainability strategies and their impact on global efforts to combat climate change.
Moving forward, stakeholders are awaiting SBTi’s upcoming assessment of carbon offsets’ effectiveness in corporate climate targets. This evaluation, scheduled for release soon, is expected to influence market dynamics and further shape corporate climate action strategies worldwide.
As SBTi navigates this challenging period, its ability to restore trust and uphold its mission of global decarbonization remains uncertain amidst ongoing scrutiny and calls for reform.
