In a significant move toward achieving its carbon neutral strategy, Microsoft has launched a new supplier decarbonization team to address the rising emissions linked to its cloud and AI operations. This team, consisting of experts from Microsoft, Google, and Meta, will focus on reducing Scope 3 emissions, which encompass emissions from supply chains and are responsible for the majority of the company’s environmental impact.
Leading the new team is Tim Hopper, Cloud Supply Chain Sustainability Manager, along with Ray Waweru, Senior Program Manager for Cloud Services Sustainability, and Sofia Khan, an expert in Scope 3 decarbonization. Hopper has spent over 20 years with Microsoft, developing cloud supply chain strategies aligned with climate goals, while Waweru and Khan bring their expertise from sustainable procurement and net-zero initiatives at Google and Meta.
The creation of this decarbonization team is driven by the sharp increase in Microsoft’s emissions as the demand for AI computing power continues to grow. According to recent data, Microsoft’s Scope 3 emissions surged by more than 30% from 2020 to 2023. Scope 3, which includes the “Purchased Goods & Services” category, now accounts for over 96% of the company’s total emissions.
Microsoft has set an ambitious target to reduce Scope 3 emissions by more than 50% by 2030, and this team is at the forefront of the company’s ESG strategy. Recent measures include a policy requiring key suppliers to use 100% carbon-free electricity.
By intensifying its focus on supplier sustainability, Microsoft is positioning itself as a leader in the tech industry’s efforts to curb emissions and support the transition to a carbon-neutral future.
